I'll concur with what skiddriver said about government jobs - I've applied for several myself. In addition, many military jobs have been made into either government GS jobs or contractor jobs so its a good time to get into them.
Saw the world, had a blast screaming around at 50 feet and below, made a bunch of good friends. Wore both the "Wings of Gold" and the "Eagle, Globe, and Anchor". Good Luck if you are going to give it a shot - you won't regret it.
Semper Fidelis.
I've said it before and I'll say it again.
If its not multi-engine PIC time, then its worthless being an FO. The hiring departments at the big airlines only want multi-engine PIC - until you change that, don't expect anything else to change.
Its driven by the major's requirements....
Its not about becoming a "captain".
Its not about the extra pay as a captain.
The problem is the hiring requirement dictated by Southwest, JetBlue, FedEx, and everybody else that is hiring: the necessity of having multi-engine PIC time. Without it...
I'm gonna disagree. I've never been an Air Traffic Controller but I would think they have a tougher job juggling a multitude of aircraft than we do just flying the airplane.
As for age, mandatory retirement is 55, so subtract 20 years for a retirement would put you at a max age to start of...
As Devil's Advocate:
1) How do you train so many pilots in such a short time?
2) What do you do in January when traffic slumps for the winter after the holidays?
I was thinking the same thing: I didn't see separate pay scales at my company for males and females. Nor did I see separate pay scales in any military or civil service guides. Maybe that whole 40% thing is skewed by the NFL: football players making millions while cheerleaders make just a few...
Y'all seem to be forgetting that UAL has been in Chapter 11 for over 24 months. The pilot's contracts may be going down, but at least the UAL pilots have jobs.
I posted this elsewhere but it is relevant here. Also, remember that oil prices don't affect all the airlines the same: if you had good management like Southwest you would have hedged your fuel at $35 a barrel in contrast to buying it on the market like just about everybody else.

If you've never been in command before, it might be a big deal. However, if you have spent a substantial amount of time as an aircraft commander you could really care less. It boils down to the tradeoff of time off vs money.
Wonder if it is the same UBS?

Go here to take a look at oil trends: http://www.feasta.org/documents/energy/oilpricetrends.pdf
You will see that worldwide demand continues to increase in large part due to "unstoppable energy demands by key, large population, fast growing economies including China, India, Brazil, Pakistan...
Uh, if you read my post there supergenius, you will notice that I said I walked their resumes into my UNIT, i.e., getting them put on military orders to help out.
You can look, but I'll doubt if you'll find, any posts where I wish unemployment on anyone. I may speculate on different...
If you say I did, then I probably did - but I would like to see the entire quote in context. It sounds more like an analytical observation of what I thought would happen - not wishing ill upon any of the employees there.
