Well, you could care less and that's fine. However, for me, I couldn't care less.
Pilots need to get over themselves. Houston or anywhere in the US is not like Central Africa where you need to speak strict ICAO phraseology for controllers to understand.
I am not trying to be a smartass, but what is the big deal about a regional ending service to Toluca? I just don't get this water cannon and nostalgic hubbub.

Nothing in the report indicated that the Captain thought it was "ok" to have it airplane mode. It was a statement of fact. You added the "but it's ok" part.
Also, how is submitting a NASA report for this occurrence stupid?
The scenario as written is plausible, no matter if the distance was 10 feet. The logic is just not that difficult to understand.
I hope you don't have aspirations of becoming an attorney, or even a cheeseball private detective. Stick to your flying job.;)
