..Then again, this mgt team is not made up of the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Actually, TPG management are pretty sharp. Don't confuse those folks roaming the halls on Howell Ave. as the 'Management Team'. That's simply not the case. MEH is being managed from Commerce Steet, in Fort Worth, TX.

Midwest to Ground MD-80's, Slash Staff

A spokesman for the union that represents Midwest Airlines pilots says the airline has informed the union that it plans to stop flying its older, less fuel efficient MD-80 fleet. In addition, the airline is planning to slash jobs.
Airline officials have been talking to employees today, breaking the bad news. Midwest, like other airlines, has been hammered by the high cost of fuel.
"It would affect a large number of our pilots," Air Line Pilots Association Vice Chairman Greg Uselmann told Newsradio 620 WTMJ. "Probably over 25% of our remaining crew members."
In addition, it appears flight attendants and other staff will also lose their jobs
The MD-80's are the airline's oldest fleet. The fleet is much less fuel efficient than the recently purchased 717's. The airline mainly flies the 717's.
A call to Midwest Airlines has not been returned.

Md80

What, are you kidding me? but yes, we might be getting a replacement finally, this is not a growth (God forbid) but rather a 1-1 replacement to our gas guzzling 80's.

They said the market have some opportunity to obtain the new aircrafts and not at a premium like few month ago.

Will have to wait and see.

Timmy just announced that the md80 will be done by end of year...didn't mention a replacement.

Damn. Good luck to everyone at MEH. I suspect that we'll be announcing furloughs soon, also. It's bad everywhere. :(

Midwest Airlines to park 12 MD-80 jets

Midwest Airlines Inc., hurt by high fuel costs, plans to drop a large portion of its fleet: a dozen MD-80 jets that provide charter service as well as regular passenger service to leisure destinations.

That word came today as Midwest executives met with employees about the fleet change. More details probably won't be available until next week, but it's a "virtual certainty" that the MD-80 jets will be taken out of service in the relative near future, company spokesman Michael Brophy said.

Midwest's main fleet consists of 25 Boeing 717 jets, which are much more fuel-efficient than the MD-80s. Midwest uses two to three MD-80 jets for charter service, with nine jets for regular passenger service, he said. The MD-80s are used on long-haul routes and leisure destinations, with Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, Ariz., and Orlando, Fla., among their destinations.

Brophy declined comment on how Midwest will replace the aircraft on those affected routes. He also said it was too soon to discuss any possible job cuts as a result of the move.

Midwest and other carriers are already reducing routes and trimming jobs because of soaring fuel costs. In April, Midwest said it would cut 109 employees, amounting to a 3.5% work force reduction. Most of the service cuts are scheduled to take place after the peak summer travel season.

I think MZ is bad karma. First Independence now this.
