Heard this story from a DAL Captain on a jumpseat...somewhat related.

Weather is 40 degrees out...clear and it hasn't snowed in DAYS. Crew shows up at their 757 for an afternoon start...previous crew is nowhere to be found

...flight's about to push back and the lead FA comes up and says that a passenger sitting above the wing says that we need to get de-iced...

Tell him it's 40 degrees out, it hasn't snowed in days...we don't need to get deiced.

They push back...

FA comes back..."he's demanding to be taken off the airplane unless we get deiced"

CA...thinking someone's been watching too much Discovery Channel...sends the FO back to check the wing and alleviate the passengers fears.

FO comes back..."Captain...we need to get deiced."

1/8" coating of ice had formed on the upper surface along the entire length of the wing.

After some investigating...it turned out that the previous inbound flight had been a retirement flight. Water sprayed on a cold soaked wing and presto...ice at 40 degrees.

Later.
