Latest thought is to get a much smaller apartment in NYC than originally planned and put the money saved and the money a hangar would cost toward a small house in NJ. With a garage and or basement of course. That would still mean a drive to the work site during the week but we would spend the weekends there.

Things are looking up a bit. Now I can start worrying about a CAL/UAL merge.

One other point to consider. I have two hangars (one T-hangar) and a spot in a private group hangar. The T-hangar is leased through the city, and the terminology of the Lease Agreement specifically prohibits construction of an airplane. If you own the hangar, rather than renting, it might be a different story.
