New hub for US Airways
US Airways is expected to announce today that it's creating a large international hub at Fort Lauderdale with nearly five times the number of its current destinations. Sources tell The Miami Herald (free registration) the airline will add non-stop service to 15 cities from Fort Lauderdale, including to Latin America and the Caribbean, the Northeast and Florida. US Airways spokesman David Castelveter wouldn't confirm or deny the plans, but did say: "We see real opportunities for US Airways to bring service to the Caribbean, Mexico and South America from Florida, and we intend to build on those opportunities." Does the move make sense at a carrier seeking $1.5 billion in cuts to avoid a second trip to of bankruptcy court? "If US Airways remains an operating entity, it could be a very successful concept and very competitive with the American presence in Miami," said Coral Gables aviation consultant Stuart Klaskin, partner in KKC Aviation Consulting. American bases Latin American and Caribbean operations in Miami, but has been beefing up its presence in Fort Lauderdale, adding flights to Santo Domingo, Port-au-Prince and Caracas. US Airways uses six gates at Fort Lauderdale and could have two more immediately and another pair within a few months, said airport spokesman Jim Reynolds.

Also, the pilots broke off talks reference new concessions. Not a good sign, I think the end is near for USAir.

I would rather see USAir flying those routes competing against AA than wait for Jet Blue to bring in their .02 pilots.

Because that is Jetblue's next market, the carribean.

Nice classy post. You may have flown with some of those .02 pilots in a previous life. Good luck to you.

Trying to cut off Spirit before its big growth spirt out of FLL.... Looks very desparate to me.
