I've been out of instructing for a while, and am now getting back into it. Are instructors required to do background checks on students? If so, how do you obtain the background check? Thanks!

Check out AOPA's guide: http://www.aopa.org/tsa_rule/

Short answer: You need to verify the citizenship of new students for primary, instrument and multi-engine training and either keep a copy of the document (passport, birth certificate) or make an endorsement in their, and your, logbook/training record.

If they're not US citizens, start the TSA process. It's not difficult, just take it step by step.

No background checks required. At least not yet.
