C-12 autopilot activation can happen anytime over 200' and then has to be disconnect no later than 200' The yaw dampner has the same restriction but has to be on prior to going above 17,000' Usually you do not turn it on low while hand flying because you are still utilizing the rudder and you will lose some control over the rudder, making it harder to make inputs as needed. Personal preference on when you turn it on, all depends how good it functions, if it is in good shape the C-12 autopilot works well.

This is why Black Shoes should not be able to see what's going on in the cockpit. What might seem inappropriate to them really is a proper procedure. Most aircraft allow Auto Pilot engagement at 200'. Having worked with Black Shoes extensively this guy probably remembers the pilot's name and wanted to get him in trouble. I suggest you just stick to your Mo Board to determine CBDR's ... and that a collision might occur 15 minutes from now.

don't forget on a boat a collision that might happen in 5 minutes might be unavoilable with big ships. As a former big boat driver who found responibility as OOD on the bridge equal to or greater than that of P-3 PPC. Only a few airplane drivers stepped up to this responsibiilty.
