Was just wondering if ATC is supposed to tell you to "proceed on course" after departure from an uncontrolled airport or if you are to just fly it on your own as soon as you are able after departure. This is assuming no special heading instruction in the clearance. The reason I ask, is I can't find a definite answer in any IFR manual, and my experiences have been that sometimes they (ATC) say proceed on course either before or after departure, and other times they don't (this at the same uncontrolled airport). Can anyone shed any light on the subject?

They don't have to tell you to proceed on course. IF you are given instructions, follow them. If not, takeoff and make your turn on course. I got slapped one night late after coming out of VRB by atc for not turning after takeoff toward the VOR. You can learn from my boo boo

When you picked up your IFR you got "cleared xxx, via... (or as filed)".

So with no vector "upon entering controlled airspace" you just procede as you've been cleared.
