Which airlines have pre-employment medicals? For example do you need to pass one at SWA, Continental, DHL, Fedex, Ups…???

If so, how do they deal with BP medication? In other words, if mild hypertension is treated with medication and stays within 120/80 (and ekg, etc is normal) and the person has the faa approval (written statement from the faa and a statement from the treating doctor) are they satisfied or do they have their own rules which can prevent one from being hired?

Are there medical specialists who'd have the right advice re: the airlines and if so how can one contact them??? (leftseat and aviationmedicine.com deal with the faa, they had no airline specific advice)

No one? Really??? Is there anyone who knows of someone flying for a major who was on BP medication when he/she went through the pre-employment medical? Were there any problems?

Not sure if this helps. I am on high BP meds. What I was told was that as long as your medication is on an approved list but the FAA you are good to go. As far as specific company policy not sure. But the interviews that I have had, it has never come up. My examiner likes to see a weekly chart of my BP when I go in for the first class. If you ask me if the FAA says its ok then my opinion would be, it shouldnt be a problem.

Thanks for your reply, I tend to agree with you in principal but when it comes to pre-employment medicals you never know what the specific company decides. Most airlines do not do the pre-employment medicals anymore and the ones who do are not hiring (American, Delta, United, etc) but I think some of the cargo outfits still do? Fedex, Dhl, Ups? I wonder how they’d look at it during their pre-employment medical screening?

At the regional level I know that because American Eagle is owned my AMR they do have a screening right after the interview process. However at both Pinnacle and AIr Wisconsin, they didnt. Good luck to you.

Tx,

Yeah, they screen "after" the interviews nowadays because airlines were sued before for turning down applicants due to failed medicals. However, I don't think anything has really changed because nowadays if you pass your interview you only get a "conditional job offer" so in other words you still must pass "their" medical (not just the faa class1). Today I think cargo airlines and possibly Continental do the pre-employment screening (in other words - "after a successful interview - but before being assigned an actual class date" screening)

Can anyone from cargo airlines, continental, etc, shed some light on the subject??? Anyone? Anyone?
