Hey guys and gals - real quick question. I have been offered a position in FLL and will be relocating. Can anyone help me out where to live that is safe, but still fun (few bars in walking distance). Any help will be greatly appreciated...jeff

Stuart, FL
Jupiter, FL

What part of Florida exactly are you working in? Stuart and Jupiter are north of FLL on the east coast.

Ain't no such place. Fort laud. is like a HUGE surburbia of a city, bunch of townhomes, condos, etc within walking distance to....your car. And nothing around them, just the odd supermarket and ugly strip mall to provide for the local surburbia sheep.

The ONLY happening places in Fort Lauderdale are (and this is from a married dude, so take it for what it is)

- Downtown: Lots of bars there. But crappy neighborhood. MAYBE you'll find a place in closeby victoria park (I did many years ago) but prob not.
- Hollywood: good bar scene, don't know what the rental situation is. You'll be close to FLL
- Beach (between las olas and sunrise): an o-kay bar scene, but looks like a sausagefest on most days. Hell most bars in fort laud. are sausagefests.
- Hard Rock casino: It, well....rocks. A whole bunch of bars and restaurants rolled into one. (Plus Ana Nicole Smith died here!!!) but the neighborhood around it sucks too.

Face it, anywhere you live in FLL (or anywhere in south FL for that matter) you gotta have a car to get around, you just can't walk out the front door and go places on foot.

That's one hell of a drive from FLL! But yeah, they are clean n safe.

thanks

I will be flying out of the FLL airport.. It seems like your replies are exactly what I am finding on the web. I do very much appreciate all your help. Jeff

It also depends on what you can afford to spend and what kind of things you are into. I recently departed the FLL area. I'm not into bars so that was never part of the equation. Where I lived wasn't bad, in a apartment complex on Sheridan Blvd in Hollywood, east of Federal Hwy about a mile from the beach. There is some bar/restaraunt activity down by the beach and in downtown Hollywood and along A1A and Fed Hwy. But the neighborhoods vary. It's about 10 minutes from FLL (by car). As far as FLL is concerned, near the beach is pretty darn expensive and difficult to find a good place.

Best of luck to ya'

Neighborhoods vary = be careful you don't get shot and or mugged two blocks from the house your paying 3000.00 a month for... Florida Sucks! Stay North of West Palm Beach and you'll be ok.

Housing expenses down here are outrageous if you are looking to buy, however there are alot of rentals on the market which should keep the rates reasonable. Most peoples windstorm insurance just doupled for the second year in a row and that trickles down to the renter in the end.

I lived over by FXE and yes you needed a car to get to anything, but everything was close by. Rent was about a grand a month for a two bedroom 1.5 bath apartment (2 years ago). I always felt safe there. The people who ran the complex sucked. Expensive rental, and even more expensive to buy. South Florida is a big rat race. Car insurance is one of the highest in the country so be prepared for your rates to skyrocket. My car insurance was about 120% higher. If your from NJ it won't hurt as bad, but it still might be an increase over NJ. A freind told me his insurance company claimed the only place with higher rates was New York, NY. I do not know if its true, but you might want to check into the rates.
