Ornstein: Mesa growing despite potential labor shortage

Tuesday April 17, 2007
Mesa Air Group Chairman and CEO Jonathan Ornstein said hiring enough employees to keep pace with growth, much of which is within his own company, will be one of the most significant challenges facing regional airlines this year.

The usual rhetoric...wash, rinse, repeat.

Well, there's a rumor from the mesalounge site that one of our newest hires to the jet is just waiting to complete high school before he gets assigned a class date.

Now if we start hiring 18 year old hotties . . . oh, yeah . . .giggity giggity .. . .

He's right about there being a challenge for regionals finding pilots as captains leave to the majors; that's universal. Unique to Mesa, however (I think) is the amount of first officers bailing to work for other regionals.

He is setting up the need to hire cheaper from over seas.

Wonder when an airline will actually bite the bullet and start paying and treating their crews better?

Uh, it's even harder when your company is shrinking. That's part of the reason for the attrition.

I'm in upgrade training currently at OH and the heads of state keep telling us that the 250 hour new hire pilot is just right around the corner. Cant imagine why anyone wouldn't want to get in this career field right now? :pimp:
