HEBRON, KY. — Air cargo carrier Southern Air now has a home base at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, and the DHL Express partner is one step closer to calling the region home for its operations team.

The Kenton County Airport Board on Monday approved a five-year agreement for Southern Air to lease office space in the former Comair headquarters on the south side of the airport. The lease agreement is contingent on the completion of an incentive agreement between Southern Air and the state. Board chairman James Huff said he is not certain when a deal will be finalized.

“We’re thrilled and excited to have them come to our community, and we welcome them with open arms,” Huff said.

Southern Air chief executive officer Dan McHugh did not return a phone message Monday night.

Southern Air would lease 33,100 square feet of office space. The board approved $500,000 of capital improvements to the three-story, 188,000-square-foot facility. CVG purchased the building from Delta Air Lines last summer for $4 million, a move the board hoped would position the airport for future growth.

The state has preliminarily approved $2.7 million in tax incentives for the $8.5 million project to lure Connecticut-based Southern Air, which provides air carriage for shippers, the government and humanitarian relief organizations.

Southern Air’s arrival would signify the ongoing impact of DHL, which has invested $105.5 million here since 2009. Early last year, Southern Air and DHL launched their partnership, and Southern Air began flying from CVG in September.

What kind of 747-400s does Southern have? Are they 747-400BCFs or are they 747-400Fs?

Also, are they PW, RR, or GE powered?

Final question, are they leased or owned?
