We have a drug abatement audit coming up. Does anyone have cheatsheet for all the rules?

One question I have is when would a 135 pilot need to be added to the random pool?

Are you in a drug testing consortium? If so, call them and they will provide a binder with everything the auditors will need.

We are in a consortium but their binder, nor their staff, are very helpful. I thought someone had to added to the random pool before the end if the quarter in which they were hired. It makes sense because the random selections are made at the start of each quarter and it doesnt change.

Get a new consortium. ADATC out of Charlotte, NC , Jon Speckman, are very good. They will help with an audit. While adding a new pilot to the random pool before the end of the quarter in which he was hired might work in theory, the auditors will most likely look at the date in which he was eligible for duty.
It's best to show consistancy between the ready for duty and the random pool, which the drawing date could change. Of course an employee should be available for testing at any time for cause or for accident, etc.

Good luck. These guys live for finding discrepancies. I think they get paid by the finding.

We just got audited and thought we ran a tight ship but they dug and dug and found a technicallity. "You cannot have a contract mx tech work on your plane if he is participating in some one else's 135 drug program, and not his own." Used to be ok but the rule changed 3 months prior to us having the work done and they got us. Probably just get a letter of correction but it still stinks.

As far as pilots go as soon as they are able to perform safety sensitive functions they need to be in the random pool.

They came up with 3 findings:
Several pilots were left on the random list because they were available for contract work, some were left on too long with no explanation.

Two pilots were not added to the random list soon enough, even though they hadn't yet completed sim training.

One guy worked out of the country and was not subject to our drug laws.

We'll see what happens.
