From USA Today:
Rocket science? Cheap fares bring more customers: It's nothing we haven't said before here in Today in the Sky, but it bears repeating: Give customers affordable and predictable fares – and the passengers will come. The airlines have slowly – very slowly – begun to figure this out. But when they do, the news is usually good. One of the latest examples comes from small Greenville, N.C. – where passenger traffic has nearly doubled from a year ago, according to The Daily Reflector. That's largely thanks to a recent trend of lower airfares that have brought some of the airport's fares more in line with those offered by airlines at nearby Raleigh/Durham (RDU). Airport officials say that means many travelers are no longer driving the 90 miles to RDU — provided customers can find similar fares at Greenville. And in a case where the opposite has proven to be true, officials in Johnstown are blaming high fares and poor service for plummeting passenger numbers. "We have not done as well in Johnstown as we hoped," a spokeswoman for Colgan Air told The Associated Press. Colgan is a regional partner for US Airways, which is the only carrier to serve the airport. Posted at 8:50 a.m. ET

Ya think?? 6 flights from PIT seems a little excessive.

What happened to the Saab going there? The computer still shows a Beech..

did they mention the avg fare out of PVG. that was biggest market at CC air. we also served nearby rocky mount and kinston before mesa pulled out. however while at colgan , i noticed we were fleecing the muckety mucks of westchester county (HPN) and greenwich, CT for about $674.00 RT to boston.

It's a beech base, and always has been since colgan opened it. Yes, the saab almost went there.....but they put it in albany at the last minute instead. Much to the delight of any saab crew members that were living there, or moved there. The thought is that the saab is still going there this year sometime. However, we still pick up saabs by the month, and they still go to other bases. 2 saabs in ROA, possibly 2 in ALB i think? and one in HYA for the summer. The beech really can be a route killer....especially when you put a C model on it too often. Why pay top dollar to fly in a 1900C.....(which may or may not be there, it may be broken,) when you could just drive your car an extra hour or two. The johnstown route seems to have passengers that were not paying for their own ticket. They often seem to be military or business people. Route would be gone by now if it were not EAS i guess. Non EAS routes seem to be getting replaced by the saab faster. (ITH-LGA), another route killed by the 1900C. I believe a lot of this decision making is handed down by mainline USAirways, not by colgan. But where the C models go, (with the exception of the ack routes), seems to be like a pinball game. Crews may even be quicker to write them up with the hope of getting rid of them during the day. The D model which was destroyed April 1st didn't help the cause.

It could be a way to eventually pull out of JST altogether. HKY is one hour north of CLT and it used to add $20 to a ticket to fly out of HKY and connect through CLT on CCAir. There were 12 flights per day that were generally full. When Mesa bought CCAir they increased it to over $100 to connect. The number of flights gradually went down to 5 or 6 with only a couple seats sold until Mesa finally said there was no market in HKY and pulled out. They basically priced themselves out of a market they didn't want to be in by making it look like there was no demand.

I used to do 8 RT's a day between JST and PIT for US in the 1900. We were full on almost every flight. Best time: 14 minutes PIT-JST wheels up/down. Certainly, you guys can fill 6 flights.

OK, so the Saab is a little late...

It's just amazing how Colgan can go into a market and something doesn't go quite right. So the Beech subs for the Saab until something changes again....SOP for us at Colgan. Still they are making $$ on the JST-PIT run thanks to the EAS money.

the more things change the more they stay the same.

Yep, you said it, thats the Colgan way...
You would think that by being based in Hef they would be all over united to fly for them out of IAD!!???
Maybe they did bid, but who knows... communication at Colgans is not the best.
