It is sad that people crash airplanes, but the original 14M award was insane.
Families of these pilots sue aircraft manufacturers for two reasons:
1) The lure of a big cash award to 'ease the pain'.
2) A hail-mary attempt to prove to themselves and the world that their deceased relative did not lack the necessary proficiency and judgment (nearly always the truth, however).
So much for one attempt at Jackpot Justice.
