Uh oh, fellow aviatrxx.....you opened a little can 'o worms there! The guys dont take too kindly to this kinda stuff!

I don't think scholarships should be offered to "women only". That's one reason I respect Women in Aviation, the organization. Their scholarships are open to both men and women.

There are some that are open to men. There are some that aren't. This one just happens to be that way. There flight scholarships that are limited to only black aviators, or certain university students, or professional oranizations ect. (Don't forget to complain about that too.) The party providing the grant has every right to select the pool of people they want to help and what others 'think' about that doesn't mean a hill of beans. Get over it. Mr Delano provides the money every year out of his own pocket to women he considers following in Marians footsteps. If someone wants to tell him that he shouldn't offer this scholarship in memory of his late wife to only women, send your complaint to the address on the application.

uhm.. don't they have to be open to both men and women? Otherwise it would be discriminatory & illegal. Same goes with those black scholarships ... both white & black people have to be allowed to apply for such things. Doesn't mean they will get it, but they always have the right to apply.

Not always. Depends on the requirements and the party providing the grant. Since the money is administered via a 501 C 3 organization, and the geographic area is wide, they can limit the applicant criteria according to the 99s lawyers. If it were in a smaller geographic range then the criteria would be loosened to include men as the pool of applicants is less. (Same reason why it's can't be limited to members only unless it covers a wide area.) The Imperial So-Lo 99s chose to limit their award to only those in the Imperial Valley/El Centro area, so it's open to men as well. Ditto with the San Fernando Valley 99s scholarship. Details are on the second link above.
