Airline preps jets for golf

SOUTHERN PINES — Atlantic Southeast Airlines has taken 10 seats out of a 50-seat passenger jet to make room for the golf clubs it’ll be hauling between Atlanta and Pinehurst’s golf resorts.
On Wednesday, Delta Air Lines and its carrier, Atlantic Southeast Airlines, will resume seasonal flights from the Moore County Airport to Atlanta.
“If the load factors are high enough, we are hoping to take the seasonal status off and be made year round,” said Caleb Miles, the president of the Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Flights will run five to seven days a week until mid-November between the Moore County Airport in Southern Pines and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
The flight schedule has been bumped back to the late afternoon so travelers on the West Coast can fly to Atlanta and on to Moore County later in the day.
“You literally had to catch the earliest flight,” Miles said. “If you missed that flight, you were stuck in Atlanta.”
A plane is scheduled to leave Atlanta at 2:45 p.m. and arrive in Southern Pines at 3:57 p.m. A plane will then leave Southern Pines at 4:25 p.m. and arrive in Atlanta at 5:43 p.m.
March flights available on delta.com ranged from $365 to $714 on Friday. Fares will fluctuate, Miles said.
“Our agreement with Delta is the fares are competitive with RDU and Fayetteville,” Miles said.
This is the second year Delta will offer the flights. The company is testing the Pinehurst market.
Last year, 5,770 passengers flew between Atlanta and Southern Pines, making flights about 65 percent full on average, according to statistics provided by the Moore County Airport.
“It went extremely well, but it needs to be better,” said Moore County Airport Manager Ron Maness.
Delta will determine whether to keep flying out of Southern Pines based on how many people fly with them and how much they spend on their tickets, Maness said.
The airline and Moore County economic development groups have been marketing the service. In April, they are scheduled to print a 26-page profile of Pinehurst and Southern Pines in Sky, Delta’s in-flight magazine. Delta is also working on an in-flight movie featuring the area, golf sweepstakes and discounts on flights and hotels. The convention and visitor’s bureau is eyeing Atlanta’s soldiers and civilian workers who work for the military because some may move to Fayetteville’s Fort Brag as part of base realignment process.
On Monday, Maness asked the county commissioners for $100,000 for marketing. His request died when no commissioners made a motion.
“We are going to continue to move forward,” Maness said.
There are still seats available for Wednesday’s flight. To buy tickets contact your travel agent or visit delta.com

I do recall the Jepps for KSOP going back in this month.

I wonder if that staff writer is uninformed about 40-seaters or if she's just putting her own spin on "removing 10 seats" to make the headline sound juicy and unique to that city. you know, like an attention getter? (it got my attention.)

P.S. 40-seaters rock!

Actually, this was done to have our own shuttle for the 40 vice-presidents of ________ (insert any department here) that we currently employ.
