When setting preferences, if your first choice is a Sunday start followed by Monday start. Can that be done in one preference? If all other criteria is met, does it pick in the order that you listed start days or do you need in to separate each into different preferences?

Example

Pairing report >= 0900 | Pairing Length = 3 days | Departing on Sun, Mon, Wed

Vs

1. Pairing report >= 0900 | Pairing Length = 3 days | Departing on Sun

2. Pairing report >= 0900 | Pairing Length = 3 days | Departing on Mon

3. Pairing report >= 0900 | Pairing Length = 3 days | Departing on Wed

If you select M, T, and W in a single preference, it will return all pairings that depart on those days in the preference. There is no need to separate.

Remember this when doing vacation bids.

Example

Pairing report >= 0900 | Pairing Length = 3 days | Departing on Sun, Mon, Wed

Vs

1. Pairing report >= 0900 | Pairing Length = 3 days | Departing on Sun

2. Pairing report >= 0900 | Pairing Length = 3 days | Departing on Mon

3. Pairing report >= 0900 | Pairing Length = 3 days | Departing on Wed

This is a great questions, and leads into a brief discussion on the award logic. Max Q is correct in one sense but

If you do it via the first method above, it will bid all trips with SUN, MON, AND WED starts all in the same preference! Always remember that trips within a single preference are treated equally for the bid as they are considered to be separated by indifferences. So in that example, it would not know to award SUN before WED ,if thats what you prefer, because you didn't tell it to do so (in that example).

In the second example, you have correctly done what you are intending to do. Here, you have specified, in separate preferences, that you want Sunday as your first choice. Then, if you cant have that, you prefer Mon, then Wed...etc.

The main thing to remeber is that any and all trips in a preference are treated equally. If you do not wish for them to be, then further specify using an additional preference to separate them further...remember, you can be as specific as you wish, even down to a single pairing...and with pref bid, there is no globalization, so if its available, you get it. (provided it doesn't conflict with something already on your schedule, i.e. a higher preference)

Great question...hopefully others can learn from it.

If you happen to have any other PBS related questions, I know our scheduling committee has the [email protected] e-mail that is open and pilots can send in questions or ask for bidding help that way.

Take care.
