Downtown Vega$

I've been to Las Vegas about five times. I went downtown once. I don't remember which casino, but I lost $20 at blackjack in about two minutes. I realize that $20 is the mark of a real big-time, high-stakes gambler ;), but I was still amazed at how fast they got my money. They were using double decks at that table.

I loved the history of it, though. I would go back downtown.

My money has lasted a little longer on the Strip, and I might have come out slightly ahead one time at Circus Circus. Also in Laughlin, when it was still fairly new.

I like the newer parts of town west of the Strip toward the foothills. I don't think I could stand the 120º summers, though.

I lost my Vegas cherry at the Golden Nugget and will always have a soft spot in my heart for Downtown. Binyon's was a freak show - old school cowboys, hustlers, scary old dudes with oxygen tanks and wheelchairs playing 50¢ craps. Dang, I'm gonna miss it there. I hope someone a little more fiscally responsible than the Binyon broad gets a chance to run the place.

Hey, Bobbysamd, you should never sit down at a blackjack or craps table with less than 50 to 100 times the minimum bet. You gotta be able to withstand an early bad streak to take home the big bucks!

Every streak I have is bad. But, my wife always manages to win a little.

Harrah's came to the rescue and purchased the Horseshoe. Should be open again in a few days to a week.

Excellent. Maybe they'll open up the voluminous resturant they used to have there. I remember being led through something like six different huge rooms full of people by the hostess before dining on my succulent $3.85 ten ounce New York Strip and eggs at 0300.

Hey Chperplt, just curious what you're up to in Vegas. Are you looking for a flying job out there, or are you done with aviation after quitting Colgan? I might have missed it if you already answered that in a previous post.

njcapt... c'mon, tell the truth, that breakfast cost ya at least a few hundred eh?

Nope. I raped the Nugget for a cool C note and went across the street to eat at 0300. I wasn't comfortable parking the wife near the craps tables at Binyon's, what with the rough trade dudes there. The chow was really pretty good.

My favorite memory from the Nugget was during the 2001 World Series, game 7, when I shuttled from the craps table to the bar next to Fremont Street. The whole table was hot that night, and I won a couple hundred betting on the Diamondbacks against the Yankees. Ahhh. Good times.

Many of the stip casinos have gone back to $1 or $2 blackjack tables. Almost all are single deck.. The catch is a blackjack pays 5 to 4 on those tables and not 2 to 1
A normal Blackjack table (single deck to 8 deck shoe) pays 3 to 2 or 1-1/2 to one for a blackjack, not 2 to 1, and 1 to 1 for any other win. Insurance pays 2 to 1. In every casino jurisdiction I've been in, $1 up to $5 BJ tables are always multi-deck shoes (or Shufflemasters), and the higher minumum bet tables are the double deck and single deck tables.
