I have my own 172 and live in a real busy tourist area. Lately I have been approached by many tourists asking for a ride. how can I charge for this? also If I wanted to teach the locals how to fly herein my own airplane what do I need to do to make all of this legal. I have a cfi, cfii, mei an Atp. any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

We used to do air tours of Chicago when I was a CFI... We could do them under Part 91 because we were taking off and landing from the same location, we weren't actually taking the people anywhere.

Having this question asked by a CFI and ATP, that is authorized to train Commercial Pilots, seems to be a bit odd, but anyways..

A good starting point for your Research would be 135.1 (5) and 119.1 (e) (2).

You can basically operate under Part 135 without a 135 Certificate while conducting non-stop sightseeingflights within 25 NM of your Point of Departure.

Theres more to it, like the Requirement for Drug Testing etc. You might want to contact the AOPA, they have more info on this.

Cheers,

If I remember correctly, if you carry passengers more than 25 nm away from where you took off, you need to be operating under a 135 certificate even if you don't make landings anywhere else. I flew air tours under FAR 135 like that.
