American to retire A300 fleet by end of '09

American Airlines has opted to accelerate the retirement of its 34-strong Airbus A300-600 fleet.
“Those planes, which we had been planning to retire by the end of 2012, will instead be retired by the end of next year,” says Gerard Arpey, chairman and CEO of American’s parent, AMR Corp.


The carrier, which today posted a second quarter net loss of $1.4 billion, had previously announced plans to retire 10 A300s by year-end, in addition to 30 Boeing MD-80s, 37 regional jets and 26 Saab turboprops, as part of its larger effort to slash costs in the face of soaring fuel prices and a weakening economy.

Probably not in the near future. We might be parking/returning to the lessor 16 of ours. Turns out a full 757 is mo' better than a 2/3 full A300. Word is, as the 757s come on board, A300 numbers might drop slightly.

757s and 767s currently on the property, through increased usage. Beyond that - who knows?
