That is a Varig MD-11 that FedEx bought last year. They bought a few of them so the "duct tape" that you see in the pic is the newly installed cargo door after it had been converted to a freighter.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was a revenue flight though. In the past, they'll use the airplane if they need the lift - painted purple or not.

We finally are getting rid of them (leases are up). Though they were the best flying DC-10s in the fleet from what most guys said.

I don't know...if they were cars and looked like that, they would be in someone's front yard with grass growing through the hood...

I have heard the nickname grey ghost. And I always thought they were POS's. A couple of years ago they flew mostly out of Indy...I think to keep the block hours low, since we pay per block hour.
 
Nothing that a little primer won't take care of
