The Challenge

We are hiring an experienced Pilot to join our NCDOT Flight Operations team providing highly service-focused passenger and photogrammetry services that advance the missions of NC agencies.



In this role, you will:

  • Fly individuals from North Carolina’s executive leadership, cabinet offices, state-level departments and state universities, and provide survey-grade aerial photography services to document highway project development, natural disaster response and special missions across NC.
  • Be the pilot-in-command and crew twin-engine, fixed-wing aircraft (with potential for single engine aircraft) based out of Raleigh Durham International Airport (RDU).
  • Pilot up to two separate models of turbo-prop aircraft in VFR and IFR conditions.
  • Provide survey-grade aerial photography services to document highway project development, natural disaster response, and special missions across the entire state.
  • Apply your full knowledge of piloting, aircraft performance, and the appropriate regulations and policies, along with your understanding of weather conditions and communications.
  • Use standardized guidelines and policies covering most aspects of work including Federal Aviation Administration regulations, aircraft operations, maintenance manuals, and department policies.
  • Participate in NCDOT Aviation strategic and work planning and implementation activities aimed at identifying and pursuing opportunities for improving operations and advancing NCDOT and state agency priorities.
  • Manage contacts made while performing pilot duties with fellow crewmembers, maintenance staff, aircraft controllers, and passengers. These contacts are to gather, exchange, or explain information concerning flight operations, weather, safety, or aircraft maintenance.



What You Bring

  • Excellent customer service skills, a professional, safety-conscious mindset, and you work best in a team environment.
  • You work best as a key team member working in groups and building working relationships that enhance team effectiveness inside the flight department and within the corporate/aviation communities.
  • Demonstrated experience in:
    • King Air or similar multi-engine turbo-prop type aircraft equipped with electronic flight instrument system (EFIS)/flight management systems (FMS).
    • Federal Aviation Administration regulations governing the operation and maintenance of aircraft.
    • Flight planning, meteorology, aircraft maintenance requirements, air navigation, and single and multi-engine fixed-wing aircraft capabilities and performances.
    • Piloting multi-engine fixed aircraft in all weather conditions.
    • Crew resource management.



Notes

  • Your work will be reviewed through pilot logs, flight operations reports, passenger feedback, and direct observation by NCDOT Aviation leadership.
  • This position requires being on-call on scheduled workdays and ability to report to RDU within 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  • When evaluating applicant flight times meeting the basic qualifications, consideration will be given to, among other things, quality, quantity, currency and verification of training; complexity of aircraft flown; types of flight operations; and hours flown as PIC in relevant aircraft.
  • We may require ratings in multi-engine (land), instrument flying, and others as assigned.



Management Prefers

Candidates with:

  • A Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience piloting King Air aircraft equipped with Collins ProLine 21 avionics and PT-6 equipped turboprop aircraft.
  • Corporate aviation experience.
  • Two-person flight crew experience.
  • Experience in Level-D simulator-based aircraft training.
  • Aerial photography experience.
  • Low-altitude flying experience.



Education and Experience

  • High school/GED Diploma, and
  • 1500+ hours of flight time in a closely related type of aircraft and/or type of mission, and
  • 3+ years of related experience, and
  • Certification as a FAA commercial or airline transport pilot in airplanes and/or rotorcraft and possession of an FAA Class II Medical Certificate; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
