TransAsia Airways is starting a LCC ? :

And they want FOs:

"Fluent in Taiwanese language" & with an "A320 Type Rating"

http://www.aviationjobs.me/2014/12/a320-first-officers-v-air-taiwan.html

So, does this mean there's no pilot shortage in Asia if a carrier can start a subsidiary...and require a type rating for FOs ?

Yea, good luck with those requirements :erm:.

So they want local Taiwanese from Taiwanese parents only, not transplanted mainlanders who came over with Chiang Kai Shek and can't speak Taiwanese, who have A320 type ratings and 1000 hours total time. There could actually be one or two of those on the entire planet.

Many Taiwanese pilots have left their employ in Taiwan in the last 5-10 years because they can make much more money in mainland China than in Taiwan. Most of my old colleagues from Far Eastern now work for Sichuan. Six B747-400 Captains recently left China Airlines to go to SF Express in Shenzhen. A China Airlines 737NG captain I met left and went to Shenzhen Airlines. Am currently talking to a China Airlines 737NG F.O. who is looking at going to Emirates or Etihad. The list goes on.

The good news is that pay is getting back to 1990s levels in Taiwan :puke:. Had coffee with an old friend who is at Far Eastern. When they restarted operations he was on $6000/month and it's now up to $10,000+ month with retention pay. They've had to do that to stem the flow of pilots leaving for the mainland.

Passed through Atlanta today Bill. Hope all is well with you.

TP,

Sounds like a game of Musical Chairs. It's a puzzle but fun to watch although the view from the Peanut Gallery is limited.

V Air is now looking for A320 captains:

As long as airlines continue to falter and fail, there'll be a sufficient pilot supply ? The herd just migrates from job to job ?

All's well here. Just older, uglier, crankier and poorer. :D

And most of the Taiwanese can't wait to finish their contracts with Sichuan and move on. Interesting they require Taiwanese . All the Sichuan airline Taiwanese I speak to speak pretty good english.
