I was recently ask to write a letter of recommendation for a former student and don't have an idea of how to go about it. I was wondering if any out there would let me know the general format for recommendations. Thanks a lot.

LOR for students

Try something like this:

To whom it may concern:

Joseph H. Blow was my student in XYZ Aeronautical University's instrument rating course during the Spring Semester of 2002. Mr. Blow was an excellent instrument student. He was always well prepared for his activities, worked hard to learn the procedures, and pursued the course with diligence and perserverance.

Mr. Blow demonstrated his capabilities during his intermediate and final stage checks by earning As in both examinations. He passed the FAA practical test on the first try.

Mr. Blow exhibited qualities of maturity, professionalism, intelligence and trainability, and I enjoyed having him as my student. I am pleased to recommend Joseph H. Blow for a flight crew position with your company.

Sincerely,

Use company letterhead if you are permitted. Do the guy another favor by printing off and signing a few originals.

Hope this helps.
