Just figured someone on flightinfo might be able to shed some light on this, to satisfy my curiosity:

I am watching FlightExplorer Pro right now and see (UAE4847) Emirates flight 4847 at FL390 just south of Kona flying east at about 530kts ground speed. Departure point is showin Sydney and destination is showing Chicago O'Hare.

Equipment shows a 777-200IGW.

Just curious what they were up to flying that route and such a distance? Wow. Cargo charter maybe?

There has been a horse charter at the end of December for the last few years. The crew deadhead DXB-SYD; then fly SYD-(forget the airport in New York); then deadhead JFK-DXB. Other than being over the holidays it's a pretty productive around-the-world trip.

Reminds me of a conversation heard on NYC ATC years ago.

The rides were rough and there were numerous airliners requesting changes of altitude looking for a smooth ride. All were denied.

Then FedEx checks in with a similar request and gets immediate approval.

On ticked off airline captain asked why, to which ATC responds "When all of your passengers are standing on four legs and none of them are wearing a seat belt, let me know!"
