Ok well not really but it's an interesting comparison.

My wife was telling me our church is doing a big push to provide resources/funding for a group that combats human trafficking.

On some of the brochures she came home with it says sex trafficking is only a part; domestic servitude is becoming a bigger and more problematic issue that is targeting a wider swath of the victims.

Some warning signs from the brochure to look for:

  • Be forced to work excessive hours.
  • Be reported as missing or accused of crime by their ‘employer’ if they try to escape (think of the hostages)
  • Slow degradation of living conditions if one is forced to reside with employer to perform their duties
  • Contact by employer at unusual times
  • Surveillance by employer on employer provided devices such as phones, computers, credit cards etc...
  • General secrecy
  • Caste like system in employment groupings
  • Unexplained, unusual or undeserved compensation/gifts/presents/bonuses (especially early on on the employment relationship)
  • No access to labor contract
  • Decreasing safe work environment
  • Forced uniform with no accommodations for physical issues

These were just the ones that jumped out at me but there were more.

Kinda funny when you think about it. Or not.

Funny in an Orwellian sense.
