At a time when other airlines in the region are increasing pay and benefits to attract suitable candidates, it seems a little strange to me that CX though it was a good Idea to slash benefits for expat pilots, not very smart is it?

Trying to capitalize on Shiny New Jet syndrome, I'm surprised that anyone was stupid enough to apply at all. "Free training" - all USD150K of it - in exchange for a lifetime of lost expat benefits - all USD5 million of them...
