U.S. Central Command said seven Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, were on board. There were no initial reports of survivors, and Central Command said the names of crew members were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
U.S. Marine Corps spokesman Maj. Chris Hughes said the plane, en route from Jacobabad, Pakistan, crashed into a mountainside while attempting to land at a forward operating base in Shamsi, Pakistan.
Pentagon officials said there is no indication of enemy fire but had not ruled it out. Witnesses said the plane appeared to be on fire on final approach when the crash occurred.
