No joke with this one. Explain the importance of planning for retirement at an early age. I have flown with a few twenty-something FOs who haven't set up heir 401K accounts yet. They've been employed here for a few ears already.

Thanks for doing this Casey.

401k is "a way" of setting up for retirement. Its does not always mean the best way, but it is better than nothing.

No, but when the company is offering to give you free money, you should take it. These guys didn't have anything...401K, IRA or any other form of retirement. Being in their 20's, retirement is not even on their radar yet.

There's always Social Security and Medicare to take of us...along with winning the lottery, finding buried treasure in your backyard, and living with your adult children. ;)

Just an FYI, at XJT, all new hires are automatically set up with their 401k account and a 5% employee contribution. Hopefully this, along with our company matching and defined contribution plan carries over into the JCBA.

Democrats are always offering free money too.

ASA's position on automatic enrollment:

A new hire pilot will be automatically enrolled in the 401(k) plan at a pilot
contribution rate of three percent (3%). Such pilot will be entitled to opt-
out at his discretion as well as increase the contribution rate to the
maximum level allowed by plan. The automatic three percent (3%)
contribution will default to a money market fund, or its equivalent, until
changed by the pilot.
